Volunteer With Us

Volunteering with Lotus Families

Thank you for thinking about giving your time to join a community of strength, improving the lives of those who have been affected by domestic abuse.

Some of our volunteering opportunities such as social media or administration do not require lived experience of domestic abuse. Others, like becoming a Lotus Blossom Peer Support Mentor, do.

Why volunteer with Lotus?

Whatever your skills and experiences, volunteering can help you:

  • Make a positive impact on the lives of others and give back to your community

  • Gain new skills, experiences, and a sense of purpose

  • Spend your time in a meaningful way and contribute to positive change

  • Step outside your comfort zone, reduce stress, and increase happiness

  • Connect with others and help strengthen your community

I am a woman with lived experience of domestic abuse. What would I gain?

  • Build your experience into empowerment by helping others on their recovery journey

  • Be the support you wish you had, making a real difference for women just starting out

  • Transform trauma into triumph by joining a community focused on healing and resilience

  • Grow personally, develop skills, and connect with women who understand your experience

  • Turn your pain into progress, advocating for change and breaking the cycle of abuse

Lotus Blossom Peer Support Mentors

The majority of our volunteers are female Lotus Blossom Peer Support Mentors. With a partner, they co-facilitate online aftercare groups for women who are moving forward after completing our 6-week Recovery programme.

To become a Peer Support Mentor, you must:

  • Live in East Sussex

  • First attend our Recovery support pathway as a client (one-to-one tailored IDVA support plus 6-week Recovery group)

  • Complete our online preparation course (one day a week, during school hours), which covers values, listening and facilitation skills, confidentiality, safeguarding, boundaries, and practicalities

  • Co-facilitate an online group alongside another Peer Support Mentor, with full ongoing support

  • Access additional accredited training and social events throughout the year

Many of our staff began their journey as volunteers, and all volunteers are fully supported and reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses.

"You gave me the opportunity to do something good out of something awful  - I’m so grateful."

How to become a Peer Support Mentor

The first step is to self-refer to our Recovery support programme. This ensures you are in the right place on your own journey before supporting others.
